These pages aim to provide a central resource on available statistics for asylum seekers and refugees in London. Although definitive numbers on both groups are impossible to obtain a piecemeal picture can be given using data from a variety of sources.

Asylum Seekers

The main source of statistics on asylum seekers in London is provided by the Home Office. The Research, Development and Statistics (RDS) website publishes both quarterly and annual reports relating to asylum applications and decisions. The annual reports, which are released about eight months after the end of the year, contain more detailed information but the quarterly reports are more recent.

Overview

ICAR has produced a summary of the Key asylum statistics for London, which is in continue development. It contains some tables and charts to help visualize better the figures. This summary is based on the Home Office Reports:

Latest annual report: Asylum Statistics United Kingdom 2008 (published in August 2009)

Last quarterly reports: The quarterly reports provide data on the number of asylum seekers who are in receipt of ‘subsistence only support' and those who are ‘supported in accommodation'.

Individuals who apply for, and are awarded, ‘subsistence only support’ reside in private accommodation (usually with family or friends) and only receive cash payments. Individuals who apply for, and are awarded, accommodation (in addition to the weekly cash payment) are usually dispersed away from the South-East of England to areas where there is more housing available.

The top five boroughs in London with the largest number of supported asylum seekers are Newham, Enfield, Haringey, Redbridge, and Ealing.
